First real day of kindergarten!

Today was the first full day of school! By 11 I was ready for a nap and was looking forward to rest time. I hate to break it to everyone but I think that I already have a good sense of how the children are going to be for the rest of my semester here and the things that they will be working on. The kids all seem very sweet and I'm excited to be working with them. It's interesting to see how the children react to the teacher who is pretty silly at times yet also very serious when it comes to certain things. Not only are the children getting used to the teacher but are also trying to figure each other out and it was nice to see the children making connections with each other already. And they weren't always picking the same person to sit next to, meaning that it seemed that they had a couple of new friends that they would like to get to know better.

Rest time seemed to be a disaster. One of the kids didn't want to lie down because they were so exhausted that they didn't want to fall asleep. 2 of the kids got into a fighting match. Most of the kids wanted to whisper and giggle with their neighbors. And a handful of the children would sit up every few minutes only to receive the "evil eye" from me and lay back down again. I was given a pillow by the teacher to be able to lay down with the children. Hopefully by the end of my semester I'll be able to use it during rest time.

I also was puzzling over something. I had always thought that in kindergarten the opposite sex was "icky". Yet today I saw a boy and a girl tickling each other under the chin and another student mentioning that he had a girlfriend. When did this sort of thing happen? I thought I was safe when I picked kindergarten that I wouldn't have to deal with this sort of thing. Are the kids actually now like middle schoolers but in a 5 year-old body? What will this semester bring?
